Very Fine George II Period Carved Mahogany Center Table, the solid molded top with indented rounded corners, above one long drawer to either side and a plain frieze finished on all sides and raised on turned cabriole legs with lappet carved knees and pad feet. The brasses are all original. English c.1740
This table with its lappeted club legs relates closely to several mahogany side tables supplied to Sir Robert Walpole (d.1745) for the ground and second floors at Houghton Hall, Norfolk c.1725. The present table shares the same clean lines and elegant proportions as the Houghton tables with the sparing use of details that rate it above ordinary furniture. A nearly identical table sold at Christie's Important English Furniture Sale, April 17, 1997 for $24,250.
